Where: Folkes-Stevens Indoor Tennis Center
at Old Dominion University
Objective: The Hampton Roads Tennis junior program is a play
based program designed to help the junior player improve their level of play based on feedback from various playing situations.
The program can accommodate various levels of players and goals. Feeding drills, live ball drills, modified play, and play
will be used during the sessions. Feeding drills are excellent for developing a stroke mechanic and for intense workouts;
however, feeding drills alone can give players a false sense of security. Live ball drills are when the player has
to control the ball with another player/s or coach and are excellent for developing the control needed for optimum play. Modified
play allows the player to develop a certain aspect of the game. Playing the game is a significant part of the development
process of tennis. There is no substitute for playing. A player must play the game with players that are the same level, lesser
of a level, and of a higher level to fully develop their game. Playing is not only enjoyable, but it also allows players and
coaches to realize their needed area of improvement. Players will be encouraged to become independent
thinkers and to take greater ownership into their games.
Levels: The levels may vary;
however, enough of each level is expected to obtain appropriate clusters (groupings). Players are expected to be clustered
into groups within one level using the Universal Tennis Rating System (www.universaltennis.com).
